The Elements of Winning Basketball, Part 2

This post is best viewed on a laptop.

Part 2 in an examination of the elements of winning basketball. Part 1 is here

The chart below is an interactive view into how important different stats are for different teams. Each point in the chart represents a particular team and stat. For each point, the x-coordinate is the number of the games in which the team won the particular stat and the y-coordinate is the team’s win percentage in those games.

Points towards the upper left corner represent stats that correlate strongly to winning, but are not frequently won by the team. Points toward the lower left represent stats that do not correlate strongly to winning, yet are more frequently won. The upper right corner is the holy grail.

Interact with the graph by toggling the buttons for teams, stats or both. Selecting a team and a particular stat filters the view to a single point. In the initial view below, for example, the single visible point represents the Golden State Warriors and offensive rebounds. Hovering over the point yields the coordinates (24, 91.7%). Translation: the Warriors won 91.7% of the 24 games in which they grabbed more offensive rebounds than their opponent.

Toggle “gsw” off to see the importance of offensive rebounds for all teams. The Warriors are quite an outlier.
